“A people’s relationship to their heritage is the same as the relationship of a child to its mother.”

John Henrik Clarke

APE Media was awarded a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant for our inter-generational project Exhibiting our Times. Over the course of one year, in conjunction with our partners Eastside Community Heritage, the Oasis Academy Silvertown, University of East London and Newham Archives, we brought together 14 Year 7 pupils from the Oasis Academy Silvertown, 10 adults and 20+ local volunteers.

Why? So the participants could take a historical look back at 30 years of leisure and work opportunities for young people in Newham during the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s, concentrating on the wards of Silvertown, Canning Town, Custom House, West Ham and Stratford.

What did we do? Skill development (Oral History)

Oral history
Interview techniques
Video Production / Dissemination

We were proud to enable the charting of the diverse history associated with this part of East London and ensuring that the stories from local older adults were recorded and preserved.

Marie Morgan-Henfrey (Ape Media – Project Manager) said ‘We wanted to develop an inter-generational project which enables older members of the community to share their stories and experiences, captured by young people and local volunteers which will then be used as a local historical resource.”
